Custom foam inserts are the ultimate in packaging protection. when it comes to keeping important items secure and safe, nothing beats the reliability of a proper custom foam insert. The idea behind a custom foam insert is to apply a distributed pressure to the largest surface area of an object in order to disperse jolts and weights. Custom foam inserts minimize the relative movement an object will go through, because if an objects not moving, then its probably not breaking. Compared to the standard pick & pluck foam usually used within cases, custom foam inserts offer another whole level of protection. Pick & pluck certainly has its benefits, such as affordability and convenience, but custom foam inserts are by far the better choice for people needing the best packaging protection. Custom foam inserts need time and effort to construct, so planning accordingly is a necessity. Custom foam inserts can be created through a person's traced item, digital drawing, the part(s) itself, or a DXF file. Any of these available methods will yield a custom foam insert that perfectly fits an item.  Another thought to consider when deciding whether to go with the more expensive custom foam insert or the standard pick & pluck foam is both the purpose of the foam and the object it will hold. Will the case that the object is in be rattled around during transportation? Is it only going to be stored away for a long time, without much turbulence? Is the item delicate, expensive, or a sentimental memento, in which case the custom foam insert could easily pay for itself through its superior protection capabilities. All these questions and much more should play into a person's decision regarding what type of insert should go into his or her case. Shown at the top-right is an example of a custom foam insert that was cut using a cnc machine to be as exact as possible.

Another fact to consider is the quantity of inserts being ordered. If, for example, only 3 or less are being ordered, then the more cost effective path may be to just go with the pick & pluck foam an create the inserts by oneself. However, if the quantity starts to climb to 5 or more, then pick & pluck will surely become a Pelican 1520 | Custom Foam Insertstiresome and time-consuming method and one should seriously consider custom foam inserts. Pick & pluck foam also has a tendency to deteriorate much faster that a custom foam insert, another thing to consider. Custom foam inserts also are on a whole new level when it comes to looks. Pick & pluck may sometimes be "blocky" and uncouth, but custom foam inserts almost always look like they just stepped out of either a showroom or a clean-room. This brings up the next topic on custom foam inserts; their customizability. Shown on the right is a custom foam insert for an assault rifle, a pistol, and accessories. The foam is topped with a black semi-vel (peach cloth) covering that accentuates the features of the objects within, making them hard not to look at. Semi-vel comes in a multitude of colors, with black and sometimes red being the usual choices. Another customizable feature that pick & pluck foam lack is the option to change the type of foam. The standard choice is polyurethane foam, which is good for most needs, however, a person may have different needs. Anti-static foam will protect delicate electronics from ambient static electricity buildup, and polypropylene is usually a better choice for heavier objects, sharp objects, or in situations where liquids may be spilled, as it is a harder, denser, and more liquid resistant foam.
